This work deals with the liminal nature of being a woman. A continuous and cyclical shift from one role to another, from mother to daughter to professional…and back to mother. The various roles we play and occupy as Woman, and the transitional moment between these roles, phases, and interactions.
Contrary to popular portrayals of women, these images often deny the viewer access to certain aspects of the subject, speaking to the privacy and intimacy of the moment/experience. The women in my photographs do not engage the viewer, implying a sense of being, that does not operate within the consciousness of being gazed upon, which too is contrary to both historical and popular beliefs about the experience of being a woman.
The multidimensionality of womanhood is seen as a self- contained world, the emptiness of the spaces in which they are portrayed reference, among other things, an inner space, a liminal space within the psyche, where time, event, and emotion are suspended. The diversity of subjects speak to the universality of this experience.
The series explores these moments of transition, the unseen spaces between that others, and at times ourselves, are unaware of.
